Jerry Springer: Actor (And Other Talk-Show Hosts Who Should Give it a Try)

With a busy schedule and a near-empty wallet, it’s almost impossible for me to check out the countless number of shows going up here in New York (and all over the world, really).  Thus, I rely on the detailed reporting of The New York Times, The New Yorker, and occasionally Variety, to keep myself up-to-date with what’s coming, going, and what might be taking the art in a crazy new direction (I originally wanted to post about this, but may hold off til I see it/it blows my mind).

The rest of this post doesn’t really fall into any of those three categories.  Instead, it just made me laugh, and it’s worth a share if only because such ridiculousness can nab you a headline (applicable!).

A Reading Full of Gumbys

This Sunday, ICBINS plunges head first into a new piece of text: When You Die You Go To Target by our blog master supreme being, Chiara Atik.  If you missed it, Chiara wrote up a great piece on what’s been spinning through her brain leading up to the reading.  I know the anxiety that comes with presenting an unfinished product to a group of people, especially people you know (which may be even more difficult).  You trust them, you’re expecting something from them, and whether they come back at you with positive or negative comments, it damn well better be helpful, because hell, that’s why you’ve been tinkering so much!  You want your baby to be perfect.  Mommy luv baby.

The Tonys: Not Just the Names of Mobsters Trying to Set You On Fire.

It’s that time of year again: yes, this Sunday almost every television in America will be tuned in to reruns of Survivor…while eight of us and our grandmothers watch the Tony awards.

Since you’re local workplace is *obviously* having a Tony Awards pool, I thought I’d chime in with some of my picks for the winners.  Although you may consider all putting your money together and paying your electric bill, since the only workplaces with Tony Awards pools are dying theater companies.

Oh Economy!

Green is the New (Great) White (Way)

Green Theater

Green Theater

It was recently announced that major construction on Henry Miller’s Theater (the first new Broadway house in 20 years) is finally set to open in September with a production of Bye Bye Birdie.  The bigger news: it’s an all green performance space.  With walls made of recycled material, waterless urinals, and local materials making up the marble flooring, all that’s missing is a giant light board-powering hamster wheel (you know, because actors love running on hamster wheels).

While the construction effort has been a big step for the green movement in the theater world, I wonder, is it enough?  Whether or not Roundabout Theater Company chooses to maintain their green standards for productions, it’s important for any theater company to be ecologically conscious and Earth-friendly.  It may cost an extra penny (and even a penny makes and theater producer sweat), but with a few ground rules, it’s easy for a production to leave it’s green thumbprint.

A few ideas after the jump. (more…)
